The Pentagon just revealed that the war in Iran, which it started, has already cost the United States at least $25 billion, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth refused to answer how much higher that number could climb.
During this morning’s tense hearing before the House Armed Services Committee, the Trump Administration defended the ongoing war effort and a proposed a $1.45 trillion Pentagon budget request, which would be the largest military budget in modern U.S. history.
Despite the fact that Hegseth didn’t answer what the U.S in this war has yet to accomplish, Iran maintains its nuclear capabilities and hasn’t reopened the Strait of Hormuz, while Pentagon Intelligence estimates suggest that Iran could eventually recover as much as 70 percent of its prewar missile arsenal, he claims the U.S. is winning. That the war is a success. It does seem, however, that he’ll deem his work complete once Iran’s regime agrees to never build a nuclear weapon.
Regardless, $25 billion is a difficult number to imagine. Let’s try:
Maui Fire Aid: $13.5 Million Over Years

As of April 2026, Maui wildfire victims were given $13.5 billion in total, split equally. Years later, the payouts are finally near, though few survivors will break even.
Last month, FEMA approved $5.7 million in funding to support the individuals, families and communities impacted by the fires in 2023.
Some communities waited years for fractions of what the U.S. has already spent on the Iran War.
James Webb Space Telescope: $10 Billion

The total cost of the James Webb Space Telescope, the largest, most powerful infrared telescope ever launched, revealing stars in galaxies far, far away, was $10 billion.
It took engineers more than two decades to complete this telescope.
In just two months of war spending, accomplishing nothing, America burned through multiple James Webb telescopes.
Artemis II: $4 Billion

Remember the exciting day of NASA’s first crewed mission of the Artemis program? The one that recently flew four astronauts around the Moon and back to Earth, setting records for human space travel distance earlier this month? That costed $4 billion.
NASA could have sent those astronauts around the Moon and back (literally) five more times with the money that the Pentagon has spent on the first two month’s of the Iran War.
335,593 Teacher Salaries: $25 Billion

What more important role is there in society besides educating the next generation? The national average public school teacher salary was $75,495 for the 2024-2025 school year. If you were to donate the amount of money the Pentagon has spent on bombs in Iran, you could pay 335,593 teachers’ salaries.
The Pentagon is requesting $1.45 trillion more.
